Thursday,July 7th

It has been a busy month fishing for Sturgeon and Walleye. Got a day off the water so thought maybe I should up date the fishing report. Not a lot to brag about had some good days but so far nothing like last year. Biggest sturgeon 9 foot, biggest walleye this summer just over 12#s. Hopfully the walleye fishing is going to get real good July August.
Sturgeon: The sturgeon season has closed below the Johnday dam and will close below mcnary dam effective July 11th then it becomes a hook and release fishery. Shad is still the bait of choise for oversized fish. Keep pickeled Herring and squid on board for the smaller fish.
Salmon: Fishing should start to pick up for silvers and chinook in the ocean it will be at least month before you get excited about the rivers. I like to fish out of garibaldi (tillimook bay) toward twin rocks for my best luck.
Steelhead: Fishing should be good off the mouth of the cowlitz river and the sandy river. The deschutes river should start to see fish showing up and time. Mid july is usally the time to start hitting the lower 6 miles of river. Cast Rooster tails Black, orange, green or#4 blue foxes or mepps in blue ,black silver and gold colors for best luck.
Walleye: The walleye bite has been slower than normall this time of year,we are getting fish there just spread out and you have to hunt for them. The dam flows are having an affect on them keeping the water temps down just a little. Look for the best fishing in 17 to 21 feet. Troll bottom walkers and spinners down stream slow looking for the edges of shelfs along the current lines.
Bass: Lots of bass mostly the smaller fish in the shallower water bigger fish have moved back out to twenty feet or so.If you like to try top water now is a good time. Fish late in the evening along weed beds for best luck.
Shad: Fishing is all but over for the shad get on the water now if you want to freeze fish for crab or sturg bait.
Catfish: Catfishing should be good in the Johnday arm as well as above Mcnary dam on the main river. For best fishing try sucker at night or late evening.
