My Archives: August 2005

Tuesday, August 9th

This is going to be a fairly short report. There's realy not a hole lot to report, Its hot I do know that. The last couple of weeks have been brutal out on the river. The fishing has been fare to good for the walleye and bass. The Dam flows are kind of changing the game up in the columbia basin a bit. Heres the deal they spill the water to get the smolt out of the river to the estuary thats great in three years we will have more fish than we can catch ha ha (I mean seals can eat) and it keeps the water cooler and slows the fishing for warm water species as they are more spread out and can be tougher to find. This just means hopefully there will be a good hold over to spawn next spring for walleye and bass. The good part is that the Steelhead and Salmon will bite better in the cooler water. So you get excited about that and then they will probably close down the dams as soon as the fishing gets good. Then the water will warm even more and the fish will go off the bite and haul ass up the river. Enough about woulds and coulds and oh ya get ready for a rate increase because Bonneville was ordered to spill the water and you can bet this winter they are going to say that now we dont have water to genarate so they are going to take it out on us.
Salmon: Starting to trickle in the mouth of the Columbia. I would still get a trip in the Ocean and wait a little longer for the river. I will be down between tilimook and Astoria for the next nine days or so. Playing with the Salmon Crab and Clams and oh ya and the kids. Next year we will have a house to guide out of and do family trips keep it in mind if anybody is interested in the Beach house fishing deal.
Steelhead: The Steelhead is starting to realy pick up from Bonneville to Johnday dam. The Deschutes is starting to pump out good numbers both at the mouth and up the river. Drano and the wind are other go to spots. To early and no water for the johnday
Walleye-Bass: Finding both Walleye and Bass in the same drifts in about 21 to 26 feet of water. Its about time for me to go to the cranks up stream because of the steelhead.Good day when you can get all three. I will stick to the bottomwalker and spinner untill I get back from the coast late August. Bottom line is not a hole lot has changed this summer Slower than normal for just about every thing that we fish for. Not a loss just a little slower :Good Luck see you on the water Bob Roberts CBGS
