03/26/2006 Entry: ""

March 23: Finsh last entry. Linda caught a steelhead, 21" pretty fish. We ended up with 7 smallies and Linda Fleming boated an 18" in the last hole. That's the third Trophy of the season.

March 24: Friends Dan Ross (503-784-4936) and Tim Muffenbier both of Oregon City came up to go after the big ones. They have each boated a Master Angler fish in the past. It was 48 at 5 AM in Fossil, 51 at the river, the water was 44 degrees, running 2550 CFS, 2-3 clarity, on a very clear day. Tim caught the first smallie at 9 AM a nice 15 1/2" fish. We had 3 fish by lunch. The water warmed up to 48 and it was a beautiful 60 degrees out. They ended up with 14 smallies, Tim got 9, and Dan got 5 with his last one a Master Angler 21 3/4" X 14 " beauty. Most of the fish cam on crankbait, but some were caught on the bottom with grubs covered with Smelly Jelly Craw/Anise.

March 25: What a difference a night can make. It rained hard last night. Royal Proctor (503-781-7668) and Steve Fletcher came up for the yearly outing. Royal and Steve have both caught big fish before, and in 2001 Royal boated three Master Angler Smallmouth in one day with us. It was 37 degrees in Fossil at 5 AM, 44 at the river, and the water was a warm 45 degrees, but clarity had gone to 7-8, 2910 CFS and rising. It would rise almost 1000 CFS today. First fish came to Royal at 12:50 PM and the water temp was headed down to 44 degree and the air was 42 degrees. It start raining about 10 AM, and continued for most of the day. Royal ended the day with a 18 1/4" Trophy smallie. We ended up with 3 smallies, all caught on grubs fished on the bottom covered with Smelly Jelly Bass Hammer. I hope I dry off by Monday. Nasty day on the water.
