December 31, 2005: Well, my SWAG (scentific wild ass guess) was close, Wednesday waters hit. The high water showed up Wednesday, with mud an 8,000 CFS+, went down Thursday but it was raining hard, and today it will go over 10,000 CFS (that's not 1,000 with too many 0's). That's right 10,000 CFS, and while the rain has slowed there is rain in the forcast. All the roads are very, very soft. Not a good time for a drive in the country. Good weekend to re-line, clean reels, etc. not a good time to fish on the John Day River. Good news we are at 110% of normal snowpack, but it's only the 2nd inning of a 9 inning ball game, and we'll have to wait for May 1st and see what we have then. As most of you know we go all year, and stayed in the Clackacraft fiberglass drift boats all season. It got down to 51 CFS for about a month, but the Clackacrafts just kept on floating. A truly remarkable boat. I did a 7-day Cast and Blast at 300 CFS, and had very little trouble with the gear boat on the lower river.
HAPPY BASSIN' NEW YEAR TO ALL!!Monday, December 19, 2005
December 19: Sorry I haven't been posting as often as ususal. The river is froze up tight, and today is the first time in six days our day temperature has been in the 30's. There is a warming trend coming which will eventually melt the ice and move it out. It's anyones guess as to when and how long, but it typically takes 10 days when so much of the river is frozen. It's not frozen very thick, but clear accross, and it's impossible to fish when there is ice running down the river. So my SWAG (scentific wild ass guess) is December 30th, based on conditions today.
My wife and I would like to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy Bassin' New Year!!
