Where have I been guiding the last month and not reporting ? Here is an update.
Rogue River Hatchery to Touville Park. More Kings than I have ever seen.Most above 30 lbs.Steelhead were taken on egg patterns,girdle bugs and copper johns. Shirt sleve fishing in October ! Catching would have been better if we had some rain/overcast. All in all still worth the effort if you were the one in the front or back of my boat. Still it was FUN watching my guests land Rogue Steelies on Flies.
Deschutes this last month was a dissapointment for Steelhead but great for Trout. Above normal temps kept Trout rising to dries and acting like it was May in October. Steelhead Fishing is improving with more normal weather. Lower river did not get a big run of Idaho fish this year but Maupin and above is putting out fair to good catches. I will be taking people to the Deschutes & John Day Rivers right up to the First of the year and maybe latter if the weather cooperates. Fishing the Lewis and Kalama this last month has been productive. A few days ago we caught some "keeper " Chinook in the Lewis. Being HENS we released them all. All the other anglers were SHOCKED that we put them back. One 35 lb Chinook jumped 5 times before being landed and released. Last Friday we fished Kelly Point and landed about 40 Sturgeon for 2 rods. Several keepers and 1 oversize. John Day river was hot for a few days after the water came up. We had some quite good Steelhead Fly fishing there and then the current drought set in.Steelhead in the John Day River are VERY spooky now and they will run from anglers 100' away. Thats SPOOKY. Fishing in the John Day Pool is improving and I will be targeting those fish for the next few weeks when I am not fishing in the River proper. I have developed a new Lure that is smashing them. It's not really new but why no one else is trying this I can't understand. We all have our little secrets. It's amazing how old forgotten techniques seem to work so well...........More Rain More Rain......Umchuggaluggalugga Umchuluggalugaa Wo......wo a wo a.....
