Hit three of my favorite coastal streams yesterday and caught cutthroat like there was no tomorrow.Largest fish was 18 ". The Bigger Cutts come in a little later in the season. If you find spawing Salmon like I did you want to fish below them with egg patterns. Make sure you are well below where the spawning males are fighting. This often puts you in a riffle. You need to pay close attention to your fly.Searun Cutts can take and reject a fly faster than a Steelhead. They are very " busy " fish this time of year. This early season rain will be good for all of our species here in Oregon/Washington.
My local river (Sandy , 4 minutes away) is totally blown out with mud and yet is running at a low winter level. Rumor has it that a NEW slide has devloped up river. This may be partially true but it does not account for the mud that is pouring out of the Bull Run river and into the Sandy.Hopefully by Monday
it will clear. I am preparing for upcomming trips on the Rogue,Deschutes and John Day while attempting to prepare my home for winter. Winter prediction ! Soon and perhaps wetter and colder than normal. My never failing predictor ? The return of Cedar Waxwings to the Elderberry tree in my backyard. About 50 birds in the flock this year. They are 3 weeks ahead of last year and 5 weeks earlier than normal.Salmon fishing in the Columbia has been great ( 5 keeper Kings for 4 anglers Friday ) to poor (1 hook up Sunday ). Thank goodness the Sturgeon were on the bite. They really kept my anglers busy.Seems the bite is good about every other day. Looking forward with high hopes to upcomming Steelhead Fly Fishng Trips. Good numbers and good conditions.Water is cooling rapidly statewide and that is REALLY GOOD NEWS. If there is a specific area or fishery you would like to hear about please contact me via E-Mail at s.so@verizon.net

Hang on tight. Thats all I can say about the fishing for the last 2 days. When those B Run Steelhead and Upriver Bright fall Chinook grab yur line all you can do for the first 90 seconds or so is Hang on tight.
Really tight if you are using one of my G Loomis Rods..PLEASE ! I will soon need to get more computer savy so I can download pictures with less fuss. I am glad to be home after a up and down Buoy 10 season. Really glad to be back talking folks on the Deschutes and Columbia for Steelhead.Yesterday we had 21.000 Chinook and 7,000 Steelhead try to get by my boat. Some were a little to aggressive and didn't make it over Bonneville. YEAH ! A lot of Fly fishermen have been visiting this site. If you are put off by the sight of DEAD fish then please go elsewhere or get educated. The fact of the matter is that we need to remove all the hatchery fish we possibly can.By killing hatchery fish you are helping the wild fish. Pleae keep in mind that I required the release of all WILD Steelhead 20+ years before it became the law. Steelhead fly fishing is going to be good this Fall with over 5,000 over Gold Ray Dam I look forward to getting on the Rogue.Right now the Columbia is colder than the John Day so plan on Bass fishing there a while longer.Even with the eleavated water levels the temp is keeping the Steelhead out of the John Day. When they get there I will be guiding the John Day. The worlds best Fly Rod Stelheading.
